Sparkling
Sparkling wines are made all over Italy – pretty well wherever wine is made…which is all over!!
The best known and higher quality wines are mostly made in the more northerly third of Italy. The most famous of these are the fresh, mostly dry Prosecco of Veneto, the ‘Champagne’-styled wines utilising mostly (like the French) Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Franciacorta (DOCG) zone in Lombardia, the lightly bubbly whites and reds of Lambrusco in Emilia –Romagna. Farther over in the west, Piemonte’s popular trio are the sweet bubbly whites, Asti (Spumante) and Moscato D’Asti and the increasingly popular light red sparkler Brachetto.
When tasting most of these we find they have an almost instant appeal, with their softness and often easy aptitude to food.
